What was your initial impression when the pediatric anesthesiologists you worked with started doing nerve blocks? Were you open or resistant to the idea?
I was open to the idea.
What surprised you or what did you like about nerve blocks?
The significant reduction in narcotic use intra-op and post-op.
How did you become a believer in the routine use of regional anesthesia?
We looked at the data for efficacy, safety, and efficiency.
Do you have any advice for pediatric anesthesiologists trying to convince other surgeons of the benefits of pediatric regional techniques?
Establish the process with a surgeon partner and engage them in the advocacy for the approach at your institution. Select a busy surgeon with credibility in the local surgical community. Implement with a high volume procedure that you can achieve reproducible results without prolonged learning curve/time of procedure.
